It appears that Nate Marquardt and Dan Henderson will have to move from the front of the middleweight contender line, as Vitor Belfort will instead get the next shot at Anderson Silva. Both fighters have agreed to the contest which is scheduled to take place at UFC 108 in January.

Belfort beat Rich Franklin at UFC 103 last week, and that victory alone, along with the fact that he hasn’t had a shot at Silva yet unlike Henderson and Marquardt, has moved him to the #1 contender’s spot. UFC president Dana White obviously sees some potential in the matchup. The two Brazilians are friends and both have explosive striking skills to go along with underrated and underused ground skills. Whether Belfort has enough to give Silva his first serious challenge in the Octagon is another story all together.

UFC 108 is tenatively scheduled to take place on January 2nd in Las Vegas. The show will serve as the traditional “year end blockbuster” show that the UFC puts on every year. Due to the way the holidays fall this year, the card will take place in early January instead of late December.

Other rumored bouts on the card include a matchup of Henderson and Marquardt to determine the next challenger to the Silva/Belfort winner, as well as Rashad Evans vs. Thiago Silva. Evans is looking for a new opponent now that Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has apparently “retired” from the UFC. Silva last KO’d Evans’ teammate Keith Jardine at UFC 102, and it appears that the UFC will give Evans a chance to get revenge on behalf of Greg Jackson’s camp.
