UFC 105 set for Manchester, England in November

July 16, 2009 | Tim | Comments 0

The UFC has confirmed that UFC 105 will take place at the Manchester Evening News (MEN) arena in Manchester, England on November 14th. The card is expected to air free on Spike TV. No fights have been announced for the card, and the company may struggle to put on a headlining fight. The event is being held one week prior to UFC 106, which takes place at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on November 21st.

The heavyweight title will most likely be put on hold until the planned January 2nd card, UFC 108. That card will most likely be the “year-end blockbuster” card that the UFC tries to put on every year. It would make sense to have Brock Lesnar headline that card against the winner of the Cain Velasquez/Shane Carwin fight at UFC 104 in October.

UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida defends his belt against Mauricio “Shogun” Rua at UFC 104 as well. Middleweight champion Anderson Silva is a possibility if he doesn’t get injured in his August 8th fight against Forrest Griffin. However, I would expect if Silva is healthy they will use him for UFC 106 in Las Vegas instead.  Many speculated that the UFC wanted to do a Michael Bisping/Anderson Silva main event at UFC 105 if Bisping got past Dan Henderson at UFC 100. That didn’t happen.

Georges St. Pierre is out for an indefinite amount of time with a torn tendon in his abductor muscle suffered at UFC 100, and lightweight champion B.J. Penn is defending his title on August 8th, making a November return somewhat unlikely.

The card will most likely consist of top British talent, including rising star Dan Hardy, and winners of this past season of  ‘The Ultimate Fighter,” James Wilks and Ross Pearson.
