Saturday night ratings good for UFC and Strikeforce

UFC 1002

The viewership numbers are in from this past Saturday, and both the UFC and Strikeforce should be quite pleased with the results. Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg averaged 576,000 viewers for the night on Showtime, and peaked with 856,000 viewers during the Carano/Cyborg main event. Meanwhile, the UFC counter-programmed Strikeforce by showing fights from the historic UFC 100 and drew an average of two million viewers on Spike TV for the evening. Both numbers are huge for the respective companies.

In comparison, Strikeforce’s debut on Showtime which featured a main event between Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz drew an average of 364,000 viewers while the UFC 94 replay that aired at the same time on Spike drew an average of 1.9 million viewers. So numbers were up for both companies, and in Strikeforce’s case, up quite significantly. However, the question for Strikeforce is how can the other fighters on their roster besides Carano draw? Can Fedor even draw those kind of numbers for Strikeforce? These questions will be answered presumably in November, when Fedor will make his Strikeforce debut. I’m sure the UFC will counter-program Strikeforce yet again, perhaps even with a live card.
