NSAC approves instant replay for MMA

The Nevada State Athletic Commission has approved the use of instant replay for fights that end because of a possible illegal foul. Here’s how the NSAC has worded it:

A referee at the conclusion of a contest or exhibition stopped immediately due to an injury to an unarmed combatant pursuant to NAC 467.718 and after making a decision, may view a replay if available in order to determine whether the injury in question was caused a legal blow or a foul

One case that comes to mind was the Anthony Johnson/Kevin Burns fight from UFC Fight Night 14 last year, where Johnson suffered an eye poke that ended the fight. The referee working the fight, Steve Mazzagatti, believed the injury happened on a legal punch, thereby awarding the victory to Burns via TKO. With the new replay rule in effect, the referee can ask for a replay to see if his original call was correct or if the injury happened because of an illegal blow.

The new stipulation passed by a unanimous 5-0 vote. The executive director of the Nevada State Athletic Commission, Keith Kizer, said the new rule could take effect in the next 30 days.
