Nick Diaz vs. Jay Hieron fight will happen ‘before end of the year’
Even though Nick Diaz put Strikeforce in a tough spot by not taking his CSAC mandated drug test and thereby getting removed from his scheduled Strikeforce welterweight title fight with Jay Hieron, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker says Diaz will return to the cage sooner rather than later. During last night’s post-fight press conference, Coker said that Diaz and Hieron will meet before the end of the year:
We had a conversation with Cesar Gracie about the Nick Diaz situation, so I feel very comfortable Nick will be back shortly. I think he’s going to meet with the athletic commission, get that all worked out, and hopefully we’ll see Nick back here before the end of the year. Jay Hieron came here to fight Nick Diaz, so we will put that fight together.
Hieron was a late replacement for the injured Joe Riggs. After Diaz was scratched, Jesse Taylor was selected as Hieron’s opponent. Hieron went on to win a unanimous decision.
Last week, it was announced that Diaz had signed a contract with boxing promoter Don Chargin and intended on resuming a professional boxing career along with his MMA career. Diaz won his professional boxing debut in April of 2005 with a unanimous decision over Alfonso Rocha, but he hasn’t been in a boxing ring since. No date or opponent have been announced for his next fight.
