Ishida camp accuses Melendez of greasing

The camp of Mitsuhiro Ishida has filed a verbal protest to the California State Athletic Commission saying that his opponent, Gilbert Melendez, used a greasing agent this past Saturday night. Melendez defeated Ishida by TKO in the 3rd round at this past weekend’s Strikeforce event.

The fight was a rematch from a 2007 matchup that saw Ishida take down Melendez at will en route to a unanimous decision victory. In this contest, Ishida was only successful on takedowns once in seven tries.

The Ishida camp has been advised to file a formal complaint to the California State Athletic Commission, but as of this time, haven’t done so. They have five days from the date of the bout to file the appeal. Melendez had this to say regarding the protest:

I did not grease in the fight. The athletic commission was with me the whole time. I didn’t bring any grease with me. I didn’t think there was much grappling in the fight anyway…. It’s kind of funny, but kind of weak. I beat him good and there’s no way I greased.

We’ll keep you informed on the situation as more information comes out.
