Fedor conference call: No UFC contract without co-promotion with M-1

July 29, 2009 | Tim | Comments 0

Fedor Emelianenko just wrapped up his conference call, and there is little news to report. However, it appears that there is no deal imminent with the UFC, at least according to Fedor and his people.

The CEO of M-1, Vadim Finkelstein, reiterated that Fedor will only work on a co-promotional basis, which means that any organization that signs him will have to share profits with M-1. This is exactly the kind of deal that UFC president Dana White has said numerous times he wouldn’t accept.

Finkelstein did say that the UFC has made an offer to Fedor, but that M-1 has countered with their co-promotion offer. They also mentioned that they are in negotiations with other organizations, including Strikeforce. He said that they are looking to move quickly,

We’re not going to wait. We have to move forward. It might be that very soon we will be able to announce a deal with another promotion. I’m going to tell you that we’re only going to work under co-promotion conditions.

We should learn more by the time that Dana White holds his press conference on Friday, but from the looks of things, that press conference will not have an announcement about Fedor joining the UFC unless things drastically change in the next 48 hours.
