Big win for Paulo Filho in his first fight since his embarassing loss to Chael Sonnen at WEC 36 in November. He weathered an early storm from Manhoef, and was able to get a takedown and lock in an armbar a little over two minutes into the first round.
Hayato “Mach” Sakurai was upset by Marius Zaromskis in the 1st round. Zaromskis was getting the better of the stand up with Sakurai, and then landed a head kick that ended the fight. Zaromskis also used a head kick to knock out Jason High in the Finals of the Welterweight Grand Prix to claim the gold.
Lightweight grappling specialists Shinya Aoki and Vitor Ribeiro chose to engage in a standup contest instead of a ground war, and Aoki ended up the victor, winning a unanimous decision.

Damn I had a funny feeling about Zaromskis. The odds of him winning the tourney were HUGE and I even considered putting money down but I figured Mach would win this thing. Damn I hate seein all of my old school favs lose like this but it happens. I also thought Galvao would make a lil noise despite his limited experience. His bjj is insane and thought it would at least get him to the final.
I was really looking forward to a great ground battle with Aoki and Shaolin but it didn’t materialize…so disappointing.
