UFC 102 Live Results and Play-by-Play

Brandon Vera vs. Krzysztof Soszynski-

Round 1- Body kick from Vera in the first 10 seconds hurts Soszynki slightly. Both fighters staying on the outside. Vera working leg kicks. They clinch against the cage, Vera able to get free. Not much action with 2 minutes left in the round. Vera pushes Soszynski against the cage, but is unable to do much damage. Soszynski looks for a late takedown, but can’t get it. Vera wins the round 10-9.

Round 2- Soszynski lands a combination, but it doesn’t do much damage. He gets the clinch on Vera, but again fails to do anything. Vera now with the clinch. Halfway through the round with very little action. Soszynski is too slow to connect with Vera on the combinations he’s throwing. Good left hand for Vera, probably the best shot of the round. Soszynski fails on another takedown attempt, and settles for clinching with Vera. He finally succeeds in the takdeown, but Vera is up quickly. The crowd boos the action (or lack there of). Close round, goes to Vera on my card 10-9.

Round 3- Spinning kick from Vera connects to Soszynski’s body. Both fighters are more active this round. Soszynski drops down for a takedown, but Vera counters with a kimura attempt until Soszynski gives up the attempt. Vera using his Muay Thai to connect on some knees. Vera gets a takedown. Vera now doing some damage on the ground, but Soszynski gets to his feet. Vera working more knees to the midsection, but Soszynski gets hit in the groin, halting the action for a minute. Back underway, and Vera is getting the better of the clinch so far. One minute left in the fight, Soszynski needs to pull off a miracle. Vera with more front kicks, keeping Soszynski away. Round goes to Vera 10-9. I have it 30-27 for Vera, but I wouldn’t argue if they gave one round to Soszynski. Official decision: Brandon Vera wins by unanimous decision 30-27 on all three cards.

Demian Maia vs. Nate Marquardt-

Round 1- Fight begins and Marquardt connects with a huge right hand!. A follow up isn’t even needed. A clean TKO victory for Marquardt just 21 seconds into the fight.

Jake Rosholt vs. Chris Leben-

Round 1- Fight opens with chants of “Leben, Leben” from the crowd. Two minutes in with very little action. Good left from Rosholt followed by a leg kick. Rosholt gets a little too excited and is taken down by Leben. Rosholt breathing heavy already, but Leben is bleeding from his nose. Leben with a couple good leg kicks. Rosholt going for the takedown and gets it. Leben up against the fence, and gets caught with some good shots. Both fighters standing now. Left hook connects from Leben as Rosholt scampers away. First round to Rosholt 10-9.

Round 2- Leben connects early in round 2 and Rosholt is hurt. Leben in half mount now, trying to pass, but Rosholt gets it to full guard. Leben not doing much to improve the position, and they are stood up halfway through the round. Another solid left by Leben, and they clinch against the fence. Rosholt with an elbow to free himself, and scores a takedown with one minute left. Rosholt unable to do anything. Round goes to Leben 10-9 on my card to even it up.

Round 3- Rosholt times a takedown perfectly and nails it. Rosholt mounted on Leben, but Leben gets it back to half guard. Now back to mount, and Rosholt is raining down shots. He locks in an arm triangle and Leben taps. Jake Rosholt with the win via arm triangle.

Thiago Silva vs. Keith Jardine-

Round 1- Jardine with a combination and a leg kick to start. Silva catches a leg kick and dumps Jardine. Jardine scrambles back to his feet. Silva hits Jardine with a big left hand and follows it up with another couple shots while Jardine is out cold on the canvas. Silva wins via TKO in the 1st. Impressive performance.

Antonio Nogueira vs. Randy Couture-

Round 1- Both fighters content to stand early, nothing really connecting. Couture with a couple short punches. Nogueira tries to pull guard, but Couture won’t follow him to the ground. Nogueira with a right hand that knocks Couture down. Nogueira applies a choke that looks tight, but Couture escapes. Couture looks like he’s recovered, but he’s struggling with Nogueira’s striking. Couture and Nogueira exchanging blows and Nogueira is cut above his left eye. Couture with some solid rights and clinches with Nogueira against the cage. Round goes to Nogueira based on the knockdown and the near finish with the choke. 10-9 Nogueira.

Round 2- Good jab from Couture to start the 2nd round. Nogueira looks for the guillotine, but Couture slips out and ends up in Nogueira’s guard. Good elbow from Couture on the ground. He’s doing some damage in Nogueira’s guard. Nogueira with the sweep and ends up in mount. Couture quickly gets it to half guard and Nogueira is dropping down shots. Nogueira looking for the arm triangle. Couture is fighting it off. Nogueira back to mount. Both fighters back to their feet. Couple good lefts from Couture with 20 seconds left. Another exciting round, but another 10-9 round for Nogueira.

Round 3- Nogueira staggers Couture with a series of shots and continues the assault on the ground. Remarkable that Couture is able to continue. Nogueira gets to side control. Nothing of significance landing for Nogueira, but he’s in a dominant position. Nogueira has Couture’s back, but Couture controlling the wrist. Couture ends up on top but is in Nogueira’s guard. Short elbow from Couture. 30 seconds left. Couture is landing a few shots, but nothing that’s causing damage. Another clear round for Nogueira 10-9.
I have it 30-27 Nogueira. Official decision: Antonio Nogueira wins by unanimous decision 30-27, 30-27, 29-28.

UFC 100 Live Round-By-Round Coverage

Jon Fitch vs. Paulo Thiago

Round 1 – Fitch misses a head kick early. Fitch with the takedown, Thiago with a loose guillotine. Thiago cranking, but he doesn’t have it locked in. Fitch breaks free and takes Thiago’s back. Thiago in a scramble. Stalemate as the round ends. Close round. 10-9 Thiago on my card.

Round 2- Fitch with an early takedown, working for the mount. Fitch controlling Thiago, but not improving his position. Fitch trying to get Thiago’s back, but struggling to do so. Clear round for Fitch. 10-9 Fitch to even it up.

Round 3- Fitch with an early takedown in round 3. Still can’t improve his position. Thiago slams Fitch backwards and tries for another guillotine, but Fitch gets out and is on top. Fitch on Thiago’s back and lands some shots. Fitch not improving his chances to get another title shot here. Fitch looking for a rear naked choke late in the round, but Thiago defending it well. Round ends. I have Fitch winning round 3 10-9 and the fight 29-28. Official decision: Fitch by unanimous decision. 30-27, 29-28, 29-28

Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Alan Belcher

Round 1 – Both guys come out swinging. Left hook from Belcher knocks Akiyama down, but he recovers quickly. Akiyama with a big superman punch, but Belcher lands a few shots of his own. Akiyama catches a kick from Belcher and knocks him down with a right. Close round to score. 10-9 Belcher

Round 2- Akiyama with an early takedown. Not a whole lot of damage and they’re back to the feet. Belcher getting the better of exchanges. Belcher working the leg kick. Another close round. Akiyama 10-9 to even it up.

Round 3-Good straight rights and lefts from Akiyama. Belcher continues to work the leg kicks. Good left jabs from Belcher. Akiyama’s left eye is mostly closed. More big straight rights from Akiyama. Right hook from Akiyama grazes Belcher but knocks him down. Could be the difference in the round. Superman punch from Belcher as Akiyama is asking for applause from the crowd. Big takedown from Akiyama. Another close round, great fight. 10-9 Akiyama to win it 29-28 Akiyama on my card. Official decision: Akiyama by split decision. 30-27, 28-29, 29-28.

Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson

Round 1 -Bisping unloads early and Bisping is in trouble. He seems recovered 2 mins into the round. Henderson looking to unload with another right hand, seems quicker than Bisping expected. Henderson with the clich on Bisping, Bisping struggling to free himself. Bisping looks for a sloppy takedown, Henderson smiles. Good round for Hendo. 10-9 Henderson.

Round 2- Henderson continuing to look for the big right hand. Bisping looking a little more comfortable in round 2. Swing and a miss from Henderson, Bisping with a short left hook. Good right from Bisping. Much better round so far. Big right hook from Henderson and Bisping is out cold. Couple unnecessary follow up shots don’t matter. Henderson via TKO in Round 2.

Georges St. Pierre vs. Thiago Alves

Round 1 – GSP with an early takedown into half guard. Alves up quickly. GSP with the clinch into another takedown. He has Alves’ back with the hooks in. Alves back up again. Fake punch into a leg kick by GSP. Alves looks timid, maybe fearing the takedown. Alves with some leg kicks, but GSP gets the takedown. Alves up quickly again. Good round for St. Pierre. 10-9 GSP.

Round 2- St. Pierre with an early takedown. Trying to work through Alves’ guard. Alves bleeding through his nose. St. Pierre trying to get to side controln reigning punches down from above. Good move from Alves to get back to his feet. GSP with Alves pressed against the cage. The round ends. Another clear round for St. Pierre. 10-9 St. Pierre.

Round 3- Alves stuffs an early St. Pierre takedown. GSP finally gets the takedown into half guard. Alves back to his feet again. Thiago doing a good job with GSP in his guard. Standing exchanges are pretty even until St. Pierre connects with a big right. Thiago stunned, but recovering with GSP on top. Round ends, another clear round for St. Pierre. 10-9 St . Pierre.

Round 4- GSP with another quick takedown. Finally has the mount on Alves. Alves gets it back to half guard. GSP had Alves’ back briefly, but Alves gains control and puts St. Pierre on his back. Alves raining down blows from above, St. Pierre isn’t in danger. GSP gets it back to full guard. Both guys back standing. Takedown from St. Pierre with one minute left in the round. St. Pierre works for a rear naked choke and finally gets both hooks in. Round ends. Closer round, but another round for GSP, 10-9.

Round 5- St. Pierre with another takedown, but Alves gets back to standing. GSP struggles, but finally gets another double leg takedown. He’s in full guard now. GSP works it to side control, but Alves does a good job to get it back standing. GSP wastes no time in scoring another takedown. Alves is tough, but can’t stop the takedowns of St. Pierre. GSP has also been even with the striking in the contest. Another clear round for St. Pierre, 50-45 on my card. Official decision: St. Pierre by unanimous decision. 50-45, 50-44, 50-45.

Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir

Round 1 – Brock throws an inside leg kick, and then gets the takedown. Lesnar being very cautious in Mir’s half guard. Lesnar with his left arm behind Mir’s head, landing solid right hands. More short rights from Lesnar, not trying to advance the position, but he doesn’t need to. Mir is already bleeding from his right eye and his nose. Solid first round for Lesnar. 10-9 Brock.

Round 2- Mir with a couple solid shots including a knee, but Lesnar gets the takedown into half guard. More solid rights from Lesnar and it’s all over. Mir is still down. Mir gets up angry, but he is clearly out. Mir can barely stand. Lesnar via TKO in round 2. Lesnar gives the double finger as he walks around the cage in celebration. Lesnar is a beast, Mir’s face is in bad shape.
