Brock Lesnar vs. Shane Carwin possible for UFC 106

According to various reports, Shane Carwin has been pulled out of his scheduled fight with Cain Velasquez at UFC 104 so he can face Brock Lesnar at UFC 106 in November. It seems the UFC wanted to keep both Carwin and Velasquez as viable title contenders, and didn’t want to basically eliminate one of them with a loss at UFC 104.

Additionally, if Lesnar was going to face the winner of the contest between Velasquez and Carwin, he’d have to wait to fight again til early 2010. The UFC wanted to get Lesnar back into the octagon before then, so the obvious choice for an opponent was Carwin.

Here’s what Carwin had to say on his blog:

Lots of talk going around right now. It seems to stem from a twitter post out of MN. I can’t confirm or deny anything I can just tell you guys that I am training harder then ever and your support and loyalty will carry me through any fight they send my way. With you guys on my side I am ready for whatever happens. Stay tuned to the site or UFC.com for any official news about me.

It is believed that Velasquez will still fight on the UFC 104 card against another opponent, and with a victory, could take on the Lesnar/Carwin winner next. However, I was under the assumption that the winner of the Randy Couture/Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira fight at UFC 102 would be the one with the next title shot, so I’m not sure how that will work out.

Carwin criticized Lesnar’s performance and post-fight actions at UFC 100, having this to say:

The flipping off of the fans that just lined your pocket with millions of dollars is just LAME. He may be a Champion but he has a long ways to go before he earns the respect of a Champion. The fans are why we do this Brock, this sport is not about fat paychecks and drama it is about hard work and sacrifice for a shot to do what you did last night. It doesn’t matter how much money you make if you can’t earn your peers respect and the respect and love of the greatest sporting fans in the world. We have no scripts in this sport, no pre-determined earning amount and no pre-determined outcomes. It doesn’t matter if you win or loose it matters how you win or loose…He won’t be able to lay on Cain or me.

With the UFC marketing machine and the fact that Tito Ortiz is also fighting on the November 21st card, there’s no doubt that the UFC will expect huge pay-per-view numbers for this card. Carwin is one of the few heavyweights who are at least close to Lesnar’s size and power. He’s coming off a TKO victory over Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 96. He was rocked early by a Gonzaga punch but was able to recover and knock Gonzaga out with a short right hand. He was a Division II wrestling champion at Western State College, and has never been out of the first round in any of his 11 wins.

We’ll pass along any additional information when it becomes available.
