Ben Rothwell to step in against Cain Velasquez at UFC 104

After news broke about Shane Carwin being taken off the UFC 104 card to fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 106, many were left wondering who Cain Velasquez would fight. The answer is Ben Rothwell.
Rothwell was booked to fight Chase Gormley at the same card, but now he’ll take a step up and fight Velasquez instead. The Rothwell/Gormley fight was originally scheduled for the August 1st Affliction card that was cancelled when Affliction folded their MMA promotion. The fight was then added to the UFC 104 card.
Rothwell is 33-6 in his MMA career with wins over Ricco Rodriguez, Krzysztof Soszynski (twice), and Roy Nelson in his career. He last fought at Adrenaline MMA II and beat Chris Guillen via TKO in the 1st round. Velasquez is expected to get a title shot against the winner of the Lesnar/Carwin fight if he can defeat Rothwell.
UFC 104 takes place on October 24th at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The event features a main event between Lyoto Machida and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua for the light heavyweight title.
