MMA Fanhouse is reporting that Alistair Overeem has been forced to withdraw from his scheduled heavyweight title fight against Fabricio Werdum on August 15th’s Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg card. Overeem’s hand that he injured in a May altercation in anĀ Amsterdam nightclub has not yet fully healed.

Werdum will likely still be on the card, just against a different opponent. Overeem still hasn’t defended his heavyweight title he won by beating Paul Buentello in November of 2007. It’s possible that Strikeforce will create an interim title in his absence.

Strikeforce: Carano vs. Cyborg is still expected to have 3 title fights: Gina Carano vs. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos for the women’s 145lbĀ title, Nick Diaz and Joe Riggs for the welterweight title, and a lightweight title fight between the champion Josh Thompson and the challenger Gilbert Melendez. The event takes place in San Jose, California.
